A LITTLE ABOUT KATIE
Katie began playing violin when she was 9 years old. Studying Texas style old-time fiddle music. In 1998 won the National Junior division, in 2000 she won the National young adult division, 2001 Katie judged. As fiddling captured her, Katie began teaching and passing on the aural tradition to young children and even adults.
Graduating from the Denver School of the Arts Katie cotinued her education at the University of Colorado at Denver. There she studied jazz under Drew Merrell, Paul Musso, Bill Clark and Classical music Gregory Walker.
It was at this time that she discovered the Dixieland sounds of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Bix Beiderbecke and many other early jazz musicians. Among them were also the Quintet of the Hot club of France with legendary guitar player Django Reinhart and jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. So, she joined the CU Claim Jumpers who were invited to perform at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee 1999-2001. At the festival she was a performing student apprentice with the Night Blooming Jazzmen, Chicago Six, Queen City Jazz Band and the Hot Club of San Francisco.
Gaining more and more inspiration to play jazz, Katie traveled to Seattle to study under swing fiddler Paul Anastasio. Paul had been a student of Katie's historical idol, jazz violinist, Joe Venuti. Paul proved to be an excellent teacher.
In 2002, Katie moved to Boulder, now attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. There she studied classical under violinist Jennifer John and jazz under jazz pianist Chip Stephens. A member of the top jazz combo, she won outstanding performer at a jazz festival in Abilene Texas. Katie auditioned for the International Sisters of Jazz group and was 1st runner up.
Katie quickly discovered the sounds of more modern jazzers such as Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Bill Evans, Clifford Brown, Phil Woods and the violinist of the bunch, Didier Lockwood.
2004 gave Katie the opportunity to travel to France and study under Didier at the Centre De Musique De Didier Lockwood. This was the ultimate jazz violin experience of a lifetime.
